prompt:  ‘  We're the only two people who turned up to an underground gig and it should be awkward, but the band is amazing and you asked me to dance and hey, there's nobody watching but us. ’
if you were to ask anyone you knew, they wouldn’t exactly consider you the partying type and certainly not the late-night partying type, but yet somehow you found yourself meandering through the city streets at an ungodly hour just to do exactly that. well, alright, it wasn’t exactly a party persay ( in fact, you weren’t exactly sure what it was ), but your friend had made it abundantly clear that there would be great music and that you’d have a ‘ good time, ’ as she so graciously put it. and, while normally you wouldn’t surround yourself in a scene that you weren’t totally familiar with, you’d been trying so hard to push yourself to get out more, do more, be open to new opportunities and enjoy yourself for once.
that’s how you found yourself here, nervously looking from one side of the seemingly empty street to the next, wondering if you were at the right place or not. she’d made it sound like the place would be packed, that there would be a line leading outside the door, but as far as you could see you were the only one there. maybe you were late? but, a quick peek at your phone told you you couldn’t be — in fact, you were early ( you blame the nerves ) — and that you’d even beaten your friend here. maybe, you thought hopefully to yourself, people just show up to these things... fashionably late. yes. no reason to freak out yet, right?  with a deep breath and another brief glance to your right, you pushed open the rickety door before you and stepped into the cramped stairway that awaited you. the drab, concrete walls and floors were covered in posters and the dim, red lighting from above made it hard to make out any of the names of the bands that were scribbled across them. you expected the overwhelming heat that greeted you upon opening the door, but the quiet was another matter — shouldn’t there be voices? thumping? music? taking a leap of faith ( not literally, of course — that would be a long way down ), you begin skirting around the various papers and debris scattered all over the place, minding the railing and praying the walls were just too thick to hear anything from the room down below. after all, there were apartments scattered all over this place, and you doubted they’d keep a place like this running if the walls weren’t soundproofed, right? alas, you were once again wrong. all hopes were shot, when you made it to the end  of the stairs and you were met with a long hallway that ended with what looked like the emptiest room you’d ever seen in existence. just as the thought that maybe you should turn around and go home started running through your mind, your phone vibrated in your coat pocket, your friend’s name alighting your otherwise empty lockscreen.

your fingers hovered nervously over the keyboard, afraid of disappointing her — ' promise me you’ll do this with me, okay? ’ you could still hear her voice from your phone call earlier on in the day, loud and clear — but wary of continuing all the same. would it really be that bad if you went home, now? it didn’t seem like anyone else had decided to come from the looks of it, either. maybe the band had cancelled? or they’d changed the location? maybe your friend had even heard wrong, and the event was supposed to be a whole other night? with each new question entering your mind you zoned out just a little bit more, until you weren’t even aware of the door opening and closing behind you, until you felt a hand carefully press into your shoulder — to say you jumped would be an understatement, but then you did much less than the one who’d surprised you in the first place, seeing as he had to catch himself on the railing before taking a nice tumble down the stairs. ❝ i’m so sorry! are you okay? ❞ you blurted out, reaching out to worriedly hover next to his wobbling frame. ❝ aha! i should probably be the one apologizing, since i think i scared you first, ❞ the stranger laughs airily, going from looking like his life was just flashing before his eyes to mr. brightside in less than ten seconds — a talent, probably. straightening himself out, he regards you with a dazzling smile, and it’s like the whole dreary space lights up just a little bit. ❝ nevermind about that! are you here to see the show? ❞ well, i was, but it doesn’t look like anyone else is here. ❞ ❝ i noticed... ❞ he murmurs, shooting a weary look to the door he’d just passed through, before directing his attention back to you.  ❝ i was afraid something like this would happen. ❞ ❝ you were afraid something like this was gonna happen? what do you mean? ❞ ❝ ah, i’m a friend of the band’s, ❞ he starts, before starting down the hallway — without thinking, you simply follow him, either drawn to him or the answers he carries ( maybe a little bit of both ).  ❝ they’re new, so they don’t exactly have a fanbase, yet. i helped them hand out fliers a few days ago and it seemed like things were gonna hit off pretty well, but they found out a yesterday that another band, a bigger band, is playing tonight, too. i was hoping people would still show up, but i suppose not... ❞ the look on his face has you clutching at your phone, your chest aching at the simple sight of it; you were always the type to drop anything and everything to help those around you, to lend a shoulder to lean on, and it seemed that didn’t stop for strangers. ❝ well, we’re here, right? ❞ you try, doing your best to smile reassuringly. you’ve never had someone, nevermind a stranger, look at you the way he does right then — you’re not sure what it is, but the intensity in his eyes has you stopping in your tracks, and you can’t even begin to decipher what’s going through his mind as it seems a million and one emotions flicker over his countenance at once. then, he smiles, and you swear he could make flowers grow with a simple look. and, you’ve never a stranger knock the wind right out of you, but he manages to do that, too. you hope he doesn’t notice. ❝ that’s true! and, you’ll stay, right? ❞ his smile only grows when you nod eagerly, unsure if it’s your nature to please or him that has you so readily agreeing. ❝ that’s great! i promise their music is amazing — you won’t regret it. come on! ❞ suddenly, it’s like you’re being dragged down the hallway by an excited five-year-old, teeth bared in a wide-set grin and cheeks dimpled with something so much more powerful than simple joy. the whole way down the hallway is spent with him babbling about how great their music is and how talented they are. you learn that he goes to school with one of them ( which leads you into learning that he’s a dance major ), and that he’s known them all for a couple of years and how much he’s been supporting them since the beginning ( you get the feeling he’s like that with most of his friends, if not all ). by the time you reach the doorway you’ve got the rundown of the whole group and are pretty sure you could list them off by name and description, but still don’t grow weary of hearing his voice ( at this point, you’re sure he could talk about a rock and make it sound exciting ) and smile just as wide as he does as soon as you spot the group in question.  ( the relief on their faces as they spot you both is palpable, and breaks your heart just a little bit. you wonder how long they’ve been waiting for someone, anyone to show up. ) ❝ hoseok, you made it! ❞ one of them ( judging by his looks, you think it’s the one he goes to school with —  jun-hong, but he goes by zelo on stage ) exclaims, standing up from the seat he’d made on the floor. ❝ and, who’s this? ❞ ❝ a new friend, and a soon-to-be new fan! ❞ ❝ amy, ❞ you giggle at his — hoseok. you like his name. — over-excited behavior, offering up a hand to shake.  ❝ it’s only been about five minutes, but i’ve already heard a lot about you. i’m excited to hear you play. ❞ ❝ well, let’s not keep the lady waiting, ❞ zelo regards the others, and you watch as their faces brighten and they reach for their instruments naturally, almost reflexively, like they’ve been waiting far too long to do so ( you reckon they have ). as the lights further dim and their music fills up the space almost instantly, you forget that there is only two sets of eyes watching them as they command the tiny stage, looping you into the story behind their lyrics. voices and melodies mix beautifully to create something you can’t quite describe, and as the upbeat music washes over you you find your body reacting in kind, bopping along as your gaze remains locked on their enchanting figures — it’s only hoseok’s touch to your arm that pulls from your haze, but you find his smile just as mesmerizing. with a hand held out to you, you’d swear classical music was playing instead of the edm surrounding you:  ❝ care to dance? ❞ he mouths it over the noise, and you find yourself nodding just as eagerly as before without even sparing a glance at the empty space around you. what was that saying? dance like no one is watching? well, no one was watching. so you did. the feel of his arms around you as you rock and sway is almost as intoxicating as the beat, and you find yourself laughing more than you have in a long, long time; you forget that your friend still hasn’t shown up, you forget that you’d been reluctant to come here in the first place, you forget that you’d wanted to go home, you forget and you just dance. you dance, until you’re breathless and you’re dizzy and you’re hearing the same songs over again. the band seems more than happy to keep playing until they can’t anymore, to have someone listen, and you two are more than happy to be their audience.
by the time you're both stumbling out of the underground club, your cheeks are flushed and you’re still giggling about everything and nothing all at once. the stars have started to fade against the orange-y hues stretching over the horizon. the fresh, crisp morning air bites at your exposed skin and stings in your lungs, but you find you don’t mind as much with a presence as warm as his next to you. ❝ thank you for coming, ❞ hoseok finally says after a few moments, words breathless but lilted with the grin on his face. ❝ you really made their night. ❞ you open your mouth to respond, to shrug it off and say it was nothing, but he’s cutting you off before you can. ❝ and, mine. ❞ once again, he’s robbing the air right out of your lungs and smiling about it, like he doesn’t know he’s sweeping you off your feet with a look alone. you find yourself looking at the ground shyly as you respond, unable to do much else but mirroring his expression all the same; you think maybe it’s contagious, or maybe it’s just him.  ❝ you made mine, too. ❞
and, you mean it — you don’t think he understands just how much you mean it. the very first time you’d been out in what feels like forever, and you’ve had more fun than you have in the past few years alone; you feel a little freer, a little lighter, like you can breathe easier. you wonder, briefly, if he does this to everybody or if it’s just you. ( you don’t know it, but he’s hoping it’s just you. ) ❝ mind if i... walk you home? ❞ for the third time that night you’re nodding along and he’s taking your hand and leading you away, and even though it’s you pointing out the directions and telling him where to go it’s you that’s happily following him. you find you don’t mind that so much, either.
